Words by Patt Eagan, Early Mountain
Each year after blending, we find in our cellar various small lots of extra wine: a half barrel of this, a quarter tank of that, a small mystery keg in the corner... Like a painter employing the colors on his/her palette in different proportions, the blending of our primary Early Mountain wines often results in quality leftover raw materials without a home. Seeing this, Early Mountain GM, Dave, and I endeavored to bring new life to these adrift, castaway lots, recovering and bottling them to be enjoyed as fun, easy-drinking wines, perfect for life's everyday adventures.
In this spirit of fun, creativity, and the painter's ever-changing palette, Dave & I teamed up with Penn Eastburn, an independent artist based in Brooklyn, NY and close childhood friend of mine, to create the labels for each wine. Upon initial discussion of the project idea, Eastburn presented a recently completed canvas, serendipitously titled "In Search of the Castaways". While the original now adorns the wall of a prominent financial firm's Manhattan office, the piece lends its name as title to this new project and graces the front label of the inaugural red blend.
A second work, "Flex My Third Eye Til I See Stars", was selected as the front label of the inaugural rosé. If and when additional wines are added to the lineup in the future, they too will bear original imagery by Eastburn. While each year's bottling will vary based on the available components in the cellar, the core concept will remain consistent and rooted in discovery, recovery, and the everyday celebration of wine as art.
